Costa Rica Shocks in the Start of the U21 Pan American Cup

Alajuela, Costa Rica – The Costa Rican U21 women’s national team starred in an outstanding performance at the start of the U21 Pan American Cup, held at the Monserrat Sports Center in Alajuela. Before a full gymnasium and with the support of their fans, Costa Rica defeated the Dominican Republic with scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-15. From the first set, the Costa Rican players imposed their rhythm, taking advantage of the errors of the Dominican team, which showed disconnection and failures. The Dominican team’s coach, Alexandre Ceccato, requested time to reorganize his team, but failed to change the course of the match. Costa Rica capitalized on 30 unforced errors from their rival and dominated the key statistics of the match, including attacks (35-25), blocks (7-4), and serves (3-1). Angélica Rodríguez was the offensive figure of the match, accumulating 14 points, with 12 in attack and 2 in blocking. For the Dominican Republic, Virelys Shantal Rivera stood out with 12 points and was the best blocker of the match, with 4 points.

We trained hard for this moment. I am proud of the team, of how we played together. My points are the merit of the whole group.

Angélica Rodríguez

We fail too much. The team felt the pressure from the public. They are young, but they have the conditions to recover and play better.

Alexandre Ceccato
Dominican Republic will seek revenge on Wednesday at 9:00 PM, facing Mexico in a crucial match.
