Chess in the Colonial Zone: XIV Pedestrian Count Tournament Attracts 200 Players

Santo Domingo.- Hundreds of youths, children and adults gathered on the iconic El Conde street, in the Colonial Zone, to be part of the XIV Conde Peatonal Chess Tournament. This event, organized by the Pro Chess and Culture Foundation, has been a pillar in the promotion of the sport of science outdoors for fourteen consecutive years. Achilles Rodriguez, president of the organizing committee, revealed that this year nearly 200 participants registered, coming from various provinces of the country. This success is attributed to the support of private entities that sponsor cash prizes, medals, and trophies.

Chess not only develops the cognitive part, it also gives you discipline, helps you concentrate and learn from mistakes.

Carlos Sánchez, a player from Monte Plata, emphasized the valuable experience of socializing and establishing new friendships in a family and educational environment. Sánchez, who has participated in multiple editions of the tournament, highlighted the benefits of chess, which go beyond cognitive development. Rodríguez highlighted the evidence that children who play chess exhibit better academic performance, greater analytical capacity, and a consolidation of fundamental values such as respect and patience. The event was attended by security authorities to ensure the proper development of the activity in such a busy area of the Colonial Zone. Rodríguez called on institutions such as the Ministry of Sports, the City Council, and the Ministry of Culture to provide formal support for this initiative which, year after year, gains more followers and promotes the intellectual development of Dominican youth through chess.
