Bruce Meyer Takes the Helm of the MLB Players Association
The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) has announced Bruce Meyer as its new executive director, one day after the unexpected resignation of Tony Clark. The decision comes at a time of transition for the organization.
According to reports, the vote to appoint Meyer was unanimous. Previously, Meyer served as deputy executive director and chief negotiator for the union against the league.
Clark’s departure was due to an alleged inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law, who had been working for the union since 2023. The MLBPA held an emergency meeting on Tuesday, but the official decision on the new executive director was made until the next day.
Meyer’s appointment comes at a critical time for the union, less than a year before the current collective bargaining agreement with Major League Baseball expires, which is in effect until December 1st. Important labor negotiations are anticipated, with the possibility of a lockout before the 2027 season.
Among the most relevant topics is the possible proposal by the owners to establish a salary cap, a measure that players have historically opposed.
