Santo Domingo – Gigantes del Cibao outfielder Johan Rojas was met with loud boos by the Tigres del Licey fans at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium this Wednesday. The match marked the first encounter between both teams after Rojas’ controversial statements on December 3rd. Licey fans expressed their disapproval through whistles and shouts every time the player approached the plate or participated in a play. This reaction was a direct response to Rojas’ criticisms of the umpiring body of the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (Lidom). The previous Tuesday, the player generated controversy on social media by suggesting a refereeing bias in favor of the Tigres del Licey. Rojas argued that the refereeing decisions, both on the field and in the reviews, were not impartial and harmed the Giants.

Statements by Johan Rojas

In his publication, Rojas accused the Lidom umpires of favoring Licey in their decisions.

In the Lidom, what they have is a mess with those ‘umpire’. Go see two plays, one of them and one of us.

The player even suggested that this situation could result in a fine or suspension from the league. Rojas concluded by stating that facing Licey implies overcoming a challenge that goes beyond the game itself. Rojas’ statements sparked a wide debate on social media and among figures in winter baseball. So far, Lidom has not announced whether it will take disciplinary action against the player.
