Samuel Basallo remains hot, but Orioles fall to Rays

ST. PETERSBURG – The young Dominican prospect Samuel Basallo once again demonstrated his offensive power, hitting his seventh home run of the season. Despite his outstanding performance, the Baltimore Orioles suffered a defeat against the Tampa Bay Rays, who completed the sweep in the series with a final score of 5-3 at Tropicana Field.

Basallo hit an impressive home run in the sixth inning, with an exit velocity of 105.4 miles per hour, sending the ball over the right field. The Dominican catcher finished the game batting 2-for-4, scoring a run and driving in another.

With this performance, Basallo raised his batting average to .277, adding 18 RBIs and an OPS of .832. These statistics consolidate him as one of the young hitters with the highest production of extra-base hits in the league.

The Dominican also maintains a solid ISO of .219, a metric that measures a batter’s ability to hit extra-base hits, positioning him among players with above-average offensive power.

From Tampa Bay’s side, Junior Caminero contributed with two hits, being key in the Rays’ offense, who managed to come back with a four-run rally in the eighth inning.

The Orioles seemed headed for victory thanks to the good performance of starting pitcher Shane Baz, who pitched six innings, allowing only one run and striking out six batters.

However, the Tampa Bay offense reacted in the eighth inning against reliever Anthony Núñez. Jonathan Aranda, from Mexico, tied the game with a run-scoring double, and then Richie Palacios hit a single that gave the definitive lead to the home team. A well-executed double steal allowed Oliver Dunn, who was debuting, to score the fifth run.

Reliever Jesse Scholtens earned the win, pitching four innings and allowing two runs, while Ian Seymour earned his second save of the season.

With this triumph, Tampa Bay extended its streak to four consecutive victories and closed a successful home stand with a 5-1 record. On the other hand, Baltimore is going through a difficult moment, with six losses in its last eight games.
