Atlanta Braves Sign Jorge Mateo After Kim Injury

Atlanta has announced the addition of Dominican infielder Jorge Mateo, following confirmation of the absence of Ha-Seong Kim, starting shortstop, who will be out of action until mid-May, and possibly even until June. The hiring of Mateo was carried out for one season, as a measure to reinforce the depth of the team’s interior. Mateo, 30 years old, arrives at the Braves after becoming a free agent, following a season with the Baltimore Orioles. Since his debut in the Major Leagues in 2020 with the San Diego Padres, the player has demonstrated versatility and an OPS of .629 in 1,411 plate appearances. The Braves’ manager will have additional options for speed on the bases, as Mateo has been one of the most efficient runners in the league in recent years. Although he has played all outfield positions and second base, Mateo will primarily play shortstop, replacing Mauricio Dubón, who will take on the main role while Kim recovers. Kim, who signed a one-year contract for 20 million dollars in December, suffered an injury in South Korea that resulted in a tendon rupture in the middle finger of his right hand. This injury required surgery and a recovery period of four to five months is estimated. Mateo’s arrival will also allow Atlanta to take advantage of Dubón’s defensive versatility, who will be able to perform in other strategic positions during the games, while the Dominican covers the shortstop position. With this move, the Braves strengthen their defense and speed on the roster, awaiting Kim’s return during the regular season.
