Francisco Álvarez Begins Rehabilitation in Minor Leagues

The Venezuelan catcher for the New York Mets, Francisco Álvarez, is about to return to action. After making good progress in his recovery from a torn ligament in his right thumb, the young player will begin a rehabilitation assignment in the minor leagues this week. The injury, suffered on August 17th, seemed to keep Álvarez away from the diamonds for a long time. However, his rapid recovery has surprised everyone. Álvarez has already participated in batting practice at Citi Field, demonstrating his progress. He is expected to see action in minor league games between Wednesday and Thursday.

“I couldn’t believe it when they sent me a video of him batting. I thought: ‘There’s no way this kid is swinging,’” commented Carlos Mendoza, Mets manager.

Due to the short downtime, Álvarez might not need a long adaptation period before returning to the main team. The catcher’s medical situation allows him to continue playing as long as he can tolerate the pain. Although surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament will be inevitable, it is scheduled for the winter. This would give him enough time to be ready for Spring Training in 2026. Before the injury, Álvarez was having a significant offensive impact for the Mets. His absence has forced the team to rotate between Luis Torrens and Hayden Senger, unable to replicate the Venezuelan’s offensive production. The Mets’ plan is to reincorporate him as the starting catcher, although they do not rule out using him as a designated hitter if his defensive performance is affected. This would open an internal debate about the rotation of hitters, which includes Starling Marte and Mark Vientos. With his imminent return, Álvarez represents a hope for the Mets in the final stretch of the season.
