Political tension in Argentina: Dispute over British ship docking in Ushuaia
The Argentine government, under the administration of President Javier Milei, and the authorities of the province of Tierra del Fuego are maintaining a strong conflict following the recent docking of a British-flagged vessel at the port of Ushuaia. This event has generated controversy due to provincial regulations that restrict the activity of vessels linked to the United Kingdom within the framework of the historic claim over the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands.
Position of the National Executive
From the Casa Rosada, government spokesperson Adrián Ravier defended the entry of the vessel VS Promise into the port. According to the official, the ship’s actions do not violate any national law. Ravier argued that the provincial regulation, which prohibits the docking of British ships, is limited exclusively to those vessels participating in exploration or exploitation of natural resources in the Malvinas basin, and therefore, in his view, would not be applicable in this particular case.

For its part, the provincial government led by Governor Gustavo Melella has expressed its absolute rejection of the vessel’s presence. The Fuegian authorities describe the situation as inadmissible, pointing out that the operation of a British vessel in a port of the province —territory that includes the Malvinas Islands according to the National Constitution— contradicts the country’s principles of sovereignty.
