Connor Zilisch Seeks Daytona Competition After Fracture
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – JR Motorsports driver Connor Zilisch will seek to compete at Daytona International Speedway this Friday, less than two weeks after suffering a broken collarbone.
The Xfinity Series points leader, Zilisch, revealed on Thursday that he has been cleared to return and will be in the car for qualifying. In addition, he will attempt to complete the 100 laps at Daytona.
In the event that Zilisch is unable to compete, Parker Kligerman will be available as a substitute at Daytona.
Zilisch, 19, who is expected to compete in the Cup Series next year for Trackhouse Racing, underwent surgery last week to stabilize the fracture.
His foot got caught in his window net at Watkins Glen on August 9, causing him to fall headfirst onto the concrete.
With three races remaining in the regular season, Zilisch leads Justin Allgaier by seven points. He would earn points just for starting the race, even if Kligerman replaces him in the car.
Zilisch has already demonstrated a remarkable recovery ability this season. After a one-race absence at Texas Motor Speedway due to a back injury from a crash at Talladega Superspeedway, Zilisch had achieved 11 consecutive top-five finishes and five wins since his return.
