NASCAR Will Not Impose Restrictions on Celebrations After Connor Zilisch Accident

In response to the incident involving Connor Zilisch, Xfinity series driver, and his subsequent broken collarbone, NASCAR has confirmed that it will not implement new restrictions on driver celebrations. Mike Forde, NASCAR’s communications director, addressed the issue on the “Hauler Talk” podcast on Wednesday, indicating that certain precautions will be taken in the Victory Lane area, but without establishing new policies. Zilisch, after obtaining his sixth victory of the season at Watkins Glen International, tried to celebrate by climbing onto the roof of his No. 88 Chevrolet. Unfortunately, he slipped, apparently with his left foot getting caught in the driver’s side window net, falling onto the asphalt. The 19-year-old was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a clavicle fracture.

I’m very grateful to be out of that, and I guess I didn’t walk out, but I’m very grateful to be walking today and to be okay.

Forde stated that NASCAR will not ban drivers from getting into the vehicles in Victory Lane. However, NASCAR will implement preventive measures to avoid situations similar to those that led to Zilisch’s fall. Forde explained that the window net waving on the outside may have contributed to the accident. Therefore, checks will be carried out to ensure that the net is inside the car, thus reducing possible risks of slipping.

Zilisch underwent surgery on Tuesday, and it is not yet known if he will be recovered for the next Xfinity series race at Daytona International Speedway, scheduled for August 22. It should be remembered that Zilisch already missed a race this season due to a back injury suffered in a crash at Talladega Superspeedway, for which he received a waiver. Forde did not specify whether Zilisch would receive a waiver for the playoffs in case he missed the race at Daytona.
