CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The world of motorsports mourns the loss of Humpy Wheeler, a visionary promoter and former president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. NASCAR announced Wheeler’s passing at the age of 86.
According to reports from the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Wheeler passed away on Wednesday due to natural causes, surrounded by his family.
France added that during the decades he led Charlotte Motor Speedway, Wheeler transformed the fan experience through his creativity, bold ideas, and tireless passion. His efforts helped expand NASCAR’s national presence, solidifying Charlotte as a must-visit racing and entertainment complex. Howard Augustine Wheeler Jr., born in 1938 in Belmont, began his career in advertising with Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. After the closure of Firestone’s racing program in 1970, he held various positions before being hired by Charlotte Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith as president in 1975. Wheeler became a transformative figure in race promotion, known as the “P.T. Barnum of motorsports” for his eye-catching pre-race stunts, elaborate productions, and his dedication to ensuring the best possible experience for fans at his events. Earlier this year, Wheeler was awarded NASCAR’s prestigious Landmark Award for his outstanding contributions to the organization.“Humpy Wheeler was a visionary whose name became synonymous with promotion and innovation in our sport,” said Jim France, NASCAR chairman.
