Elliott Rallies and Wins at OT in Kansas: NASCAR Playoff Heating Up

4 Min Read

In a race full of emotions and unexpected twists, Chase Elliott took the victory at Kansas Speedway, securing his place in the third round of the NASCAR playoffs. The driver, starting from eighth position, starred in a spectacular comeback in the last two laps of extra time, taking the checkered flag. The competition, which seemed destined for Denny Hamlin, who dominated much of the race leading 159 laps, had a wild finish. Several incidents, including a slow pit stop that relegated Hamlin to seventh position, opened the doors to victory for Bubba Wallace. A crash involving Zane Smith and the subsequent red flag set the stage for a final overtime restart. Wallace and Christopher Bell engaged in an intense battle for the victory. At a crucial moment, Hamlin appeared on the scene, and in the fight for position, Wallace brushed the wall, which allowed Elliott, in a bold maneuver, to overtake Hamlin and secure his second victory of the season.

What a crazy finish! I hope everyone enjoyed it. I certainly did.

Chase Elliott avanzó desde la octava posición hasta la bandera a cuadros en un sprint de dos vueltas en el Kansas Speedway, asegurando su lugar en la tercera ronda de los playoffs de la NASCAR.
Elliott joins Ryan Blaney as the drivers already qualified for the third round. The field will be reduced from 12 to eight drivers after the next race in Concord, North Carolina. Elliott stated that, once in a position to win, he did not give up.

I wasn’t going to lift, so I didn’t know what was going to happen. In the end, it was what it was. Where it ended, it would end. At that moment, we were all committed. It’s great to be eighth on the restart and somehow win with a green and white flag. Very good.

Hamlin, visibly disappointed after finishing second, needed the victory to secure his place in the next round. Despite the problems with the power steering in the last laps, Hamlin expressed his frustration.

Simply very disappointing. I wanted it a lot. It would have been number 60 for me. Obviously, I got very, very tight with Wallace, and it got very tight and we let Elliott win.

Bell and Chase Briscoe, Hamlin’s teammates, completed the top four. Wallace, although finishing fifth, was satisfied with the result, considering the difficulties his car faced at the beginning of the race. Elliott, driving a Chevrolet from Hendrick Motorsports, was the only non-Toyota driver in the top five. The next playoff race will be at the hybrid oval/road course of Charlotte Motor Speedway. The four drivers at risk of elimination from the playoffs before that race are Ross Chastain, Austin Cindric, Reddick, and Wallace.

Obviously, there’s only one thing we can do in Charlotte (win), and that’s what we’ll focus on.
