Ryan Blaney Wins at Daytona, Securing a Playoff Spot and Defining the Season Finale
In an exciting race that marked the end of the NASCAR regular season at Daytona International Speedway, Ryan Blaney took the victory in a high-tension competition. Blaney’s triumph not only secured him a place in the playoffs, but also knocked out an unexpected contender and guaranteed Alex Bowman’s presence in the final phase of the championship.
Blaney, who started from the thirteenth position with two laps to go, demonstrated his skill at the wheel of his Team Penske Ford, taking it to the top and crossing the finish line in first place. He beat Daniel Suarez by a narrow margin of 0.031 seconds, followed by Justin Haley and Cole Custer.
Erik Jones and Chris Buescher rounded out the top five. Blaney, who finished second in the regular season standings, expressed his excitement about the victory. “What wild last laps!” commented Blaney, who waited until the end to move aggressively through traffic. “It’s not the traditional way we like to race, we like to lead laps and things like that. We just couldn’t get there until the last second.”
Blaney’s victory represented an achievement for Team Penske, winner of the last three Cup Series championships. Joey Logano won in 2022, Blaney in 2023, and Logano again last year.

The team has won those titles by overcoming the summer bumps and then accelerating when the playoffs begin. Blaney’s victory ended an 11-race winless streak for Penske and Ford.
The Last Two Positions
Tyler Reddick, after an early crash, secured his place in the playoffs. The situation was defined when Bowman was involved in an accident, which guaranteed Reddick’s spot in the group of 16 drivers.
Before the race, Reddick and Bowman were fighting to secure the last spots in the playoffs. Reddick, last year’s regular season champion, had a 29-point lead over Bowman. However, after Bowman’s accident, his hopes vanished.
“There’s nothing you can do, welcome to the super speedway racing,” Bowman commented on the accident. “We felt it was out of our control and it is what it is.”
Tribute to Karl Kainhofer
Before the race, Team Penske mourned the loss of Karl Kainhofer, the first employee hired by Roger Penske in 1966. Kainhofer was part of 10 of Penske’s 20 Indianapolis 500 victories.
“Karl Kainhofer’s contributions to Team Penske are incalculable,” Penske said.
Upcoming Events
The playoffs will begin on August 31st at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. The race was the regular season finale in 2024 and was won by Chase Briscoe, who used the victory to claim the final playoff spot.
