Christopher Bell Wins at Bristol as Joe Gibbs Racing Dominates the First Round of Playoffs

In an exciting race at Bristol Motor Speedway, Christopher Bell, driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, took the victory, thus completing a perfect sweep of the first round in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Bell, starting from fourth position, staged a spectacular comeback on the final restart, leading the last four laps of the 0.533-mile oval. This victory marked the end of a 24-race winless streak, marking his fourth win of the season.

It wasn’t easy in the end, but we did it. We know that any week can be ours, and it hadn’t been for a long time. But Bristol, friend, tonight is ours!

Christopher Bell
Bell joins his JGR teammates, Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe, as winners in this first phase of the playoffs. In contrast, Alex Bowman, Austin Dillon, Shane van Gisbergen, and Josh Berry were eliminated from championship contention.

I’m very excited about the start of the playoffs.

Joe Gibbs, team owner
Brad Keselowski, who was looking to break a 51-race winless streak, finished in second place, followed by Zane Smith, Ryan Blaney, and Joey Logano. The race was marked by a record 14 yellow flags, totaling 137 caution laps. Drivers and teams faced significant challenges adapting to a new right-side tire, which exhibited excessive wear and required more pit stops. The playoff drama reached its peak when, with 40 laps to go, a fire broke out in the number 2 Ford of Austin Cindric. Although his team managed to extinguish the flames, Cindric lost several laps in the pits and reappeared outside the top 30 places. Despite the setbacks, Cindric managed to secure the last spot to advance to the second round, finishing in 30th position.

We’re going to keep moving forward. I believe in this team. I believe in myself. I haven’t been driving as well as I am now in the Cup Series.

Alex Bowman, after recovering from a spin, managed to take second place. However, he finished eighth, being 10 points away from the classification. Ty Gibbs, seeking his first Cup victory, led the most laps (201 of 500), but a mistake on his final pit stop significantly set him back. Josh Berry was the first driver eliminated from the competition, after an incident that forced him to abandon the race. Simply disappointing. It was going to be a lot of fun. We were making progress. It’s been a couple of tough weeks, but not because of the performance. We executed well and ran well, we just didn’t get the results. Bell, known for his usual calm, expressed his frustration after a previous race, criticizing his team’s strategy. The driver, who hadn’t won in 24 races, was annoyed to see his teammates achieve victories. The second round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs will begin on Sunday, September 21st at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
