Poirier vs. Diaz in Boxing: “I’m In”, Challenge Surprises Fans

Dustin Poirier, although retired from mixed martial arts, would consider a boxing match against Nate Diaz. Poirier, 36, announced his retirement from the UFC in July, after his last fight against Max Holloway in his home state of Louisiana. Despite having made it clear that he has no intention of fighting again, he made a surprising statement on social media.

Zuffa Boxing, 12 rounds, me and Nathaniel, I would do it.

Poirier added that it would be the only fight he would accept. The fight between Poirier (30-10) and Diaz (21-13) was scheduled for 2018 in the UFC, but it didn’t happen. Both fighters blame each other for the cancellation. Poirier argued that Diaz’s long negotiations with the UFC were the main reason, while Diaz accused Poirier of withdrawing due to injuries. Diaz, 40 years old, left the UFC in 2022 to explore other opportunities. He debuted in professional boxing against Jake Paul in 2023, losing by unanimous decision. In his last appearance, he defeated Jorge Masvidal in July 2024. Diaz has expressed interest in returning to the UFC at some point. He has not yet responded to Poirier’s proposal.

I’m retired, I’m done, but Nate is one who got away.

On Monday, Zuffa Boxing announced a long-term broadcast deal in the United States with Paramount+ and CBS. The promoter, founded this year, is led by UFC CEO Dana White.
