Charles Oliveira Returns Triumphant in Rio de Janeiro

In a spectacular return, Charles Oliveira demonstrated his worth in Rio de Janeiro, just four months after suffering the toughest knockout of his career. Oliveira submitted Mateusz Gamrot in the main event of UFC Fight Night, sealing a victory that resonated in the Farmasi arena. The fight, which took place 105 days after his knockout loss to Ilia Topuria, raised doubts about whether Oliveira was recovering quickly enough. However, the Brazilian fighter dispelled any concerns with a dominant performance.

I’m trying to hold back the tears right now. This is for you, the Brazilian fans. This is not about money, fame, or status. This is for Brazil.

Oliveira’s victory added a new chapter to his outstanding career. He extended his UFC records for finishes (21) and submissions (17). In addition, he tied with Neil Magny on the list of most wins in UFC history with 24, surpassed only by Jim Miller, who has 27. Immediately after his triumph, Oliveira reiterated his desire to face the BMF champion and ranked lightweight, Max Holloway. Both fighters met more than a decade ago, in 2015, where Holloway defeated Oliveira in a featherweight fight. The fight was characteristic of Oliveira from the start. He imposed his Muay Thai style, pressuring Gamrot. Although Gamrot achieved a takedown in the first round, Oliveira responded with an omoplata threat, reversing the position and taking his opponent’s back. In the second round, Oliveira took Gamrot to a clinch, lifting him off the ground. Finally, he secured Gamrot’s back and applied the chokehold. This moment was especially significant for Oliveira, who hadn’t had the opportunity to defend his belt in Brazil since March 2020. Before this victory, Oliveira was already ranked as number 4 in UFC lightweight. Gamrot, for his part, was ranked number 8. Max Holloway is coming off a decision victory over Dustin Poirier in July.
