Conor McGregor Withdraws from Presidential Election in Ireland

The famous mixed martial arts fighter, Conor McGregor, has decided to withdraw from the race for the presidency of Ireland. In addition, the athlete has described the electoral process as undemocratic. At 37 years old, the chances of McGregor appearing on the ballot in October were minimal. To achieve this, he needed the support of 20 members of parliament or four local authorities. Although he tried to combine his enormous popularity on social media with the support of influential figures, such as Elon Musk, to obtain a nomination, he finally announced that he would cease these efforts on Sunday.

“I want to assure the people of Ireland that this will not be my last election,” McGregor wrote on X. “You will see me campaigning again in the future, fighting for your rights and representing the best interests of our nation.”

Despite being a highly followed figure on social media, McGregor’s position in Ireland, especially as a political figure, is questionable. In November, he was found liable in a sexual assault case that occurred in 2018, in which he was accused of raping a woman in a Dublin hotel. A recent poll by the Sunday Independent in Ireland revealed that only 7% of respondents would have voted for McGregor. McGregor (22-6) hasn’t fought in the UFC since suffering a broken leg in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021. He has expressed interest in participating in the UFC event scheduled at the White House in the United States in the summer of 2026.
