Conor McGregor Withdraws from Presidential Race in Ireland

The renowned MMA fighter, Conor McGregor, has announced his withdrawal from the race for the presidency of Ireland. The athlete, known for his charisma and controversies, also criticized the electoral process, calling it “undemocratic”. At 37 years old, McGregor’s chances of appearing on the October ballot were minimal. To achieve this, he needed the support of 20 members of parliament or four local authorities. Despite his efforts to mobilize his followers on social media and obtain the support of influential figures like Elon Musk, McGregor has decided to cease his attempts.

“I want to assure the people of Ireland that this will not be my last election,” McGregor wrote on X. “You will see me campaigning again in the future, fighting for your rights and representing the best interests of our nation.”

Although McGregor enjoys great popularity on social media, his position as a political figure in Ireland is questionable. In November, he was found responsible in a sexual assault case dating back to an incident in 2018. Furthermore, a recent poll revealed that only 7% of respondents would vote for him. McGregor (22-6) hasn’t competed in the UFC since suffering a broken leg in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021. However, he has expressed interest in participating in the UFC’s planned event at the White House in the summer of 2026.
