Maycee Barber Suffers Medical Emergency Before UFC Fight

UFC flyweight fighter Maycee Barber experienced a “medical emergency” approximately 30 minutes before her scheduled bout on Saturday, forcing her to withdraw from the event. Barber, with a record of 14-2, was scheduled to face Erin Blanchfield (13-2) in the main event of UFC Fight Night at the Apex in Las Vegas. According to Barber, the incident occurred in the locker room during the warm-up, which led the commissioners to cancel the 125-pound fight. The official cancellation occurred after the UFC had already presented a video and fans were waiting for Barber’s entrance music.

We are not entirely sure what happened. There was an event in the locker room while I was warming up, and the doctor, the commissioners, everyone saw it. The commissioners asked if I was okay. I was saying yes, and they didn’t believe I was.

Blanchfield informed the media that he was told Barber had suffered a seizure, although Barber claims it is not yet confirmed. Barber, 27, indicated that he felt well before the complication. Although he didn’t reach the weight by half a pound the day before, he stated that it was a normal weight cut and there were no evident signs of medical problems during or after. She was hospitalized on Saturday night and discharged on Monday. In 2024, Barber was also hospitalized for medical issues that, according to her, doctors still don’t fully understand. She is currently on a six-fight winning streak, but hasn’t fought since March 2024. Previously, she was forced to withdraw from a scheduled fight against Rose Namajunas in July 2024. The UFC is already collaborating with Barber to connect her with several specialists. There is no defined timeframe for her return, as the real problem still needs to be identified. Barber expressed her gratitude for being alive, despite the frustration of the situation. The fighter commented on the negative comments on social media and highlighted her dedication to the UFC and her lifelong dream.
