Islam Makhachev fulfilled his goal of becoming a two-division champion on Saturday night. At UFC 322, held at Madison Square Garden, Makhachev dominated Jack Della Maddalena for five rounds, securing the welterweight championship by unanimous decision. With this victory, Makhachev (28-1) tied Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history, adding his sixteenth consecutive victory. In addition, he added significant control time, accumulating 19 minutes and 10 seconds against Della Maddalena in an undefeated streak that spans a decade.

This is the dream. I’ve fought for this my whole life. I’ve worked hard for this moment.

Della Maddalena (18-3), who hadn’t lost since his first two professional MMA fights, couldn’t handle Makhachev. The latter achieved every takedown he attempted, keeping the Australian fighter with his back glued to the mat for long periods. My life has changed. I didn’t have to cut weight. I can do what I want. He made tonight easy. The fight was controlled by Makhachev in all aspects. He outstruck Della Maddalena, with a score of 123-32, and used calf kicks that hindered the champion’s performance. Della Maddalena seemed to resign himself to defeat in the third round, but refused to be finished. Makhachev, however, remained firm.

This was my plan, and it’s no secret. All my opponents know it, but nobody can stop it.
