Ilia Topuria Challenges Terence Crawford: An Impossible Crossover?

After Terence Crawford’s impressive victory over Canelo Álvarez, which crowned him undisputed super middleweight champion, a new challenger has spoken up. However, Crawford doesn’t seem interested in this challenge. Ilia Topuria, the undefeated UFC champion in two weight categories, has expressed his desire to test his power in boxing, challenging Crawford, the undisputed champion in three divisions. Topuria used social media to assert that he would knock out Crawford if they faced each other in a ring.

First he calls me a drunk, then he uses MY song.

Crawford’s response was immediate, dismissing Topuria as “delusional” and “drunk.” The controversy intensified when Topuria noticed that Crawford entered the ring with the song “Canción del Mariachi” from the movie “Desperado,” the same song Topuria uses for his UFC cage entrances. Crawford downplayed the situation, but Topuria reacted on social media. Crawford, in addition to ignoring Topuria’s challenge, accused him of seeking attention and stated that he is not at Conor McGregor’s level.

I definitely think he is looking for attention.

Crawford also mentioned that he has never seen Topuria fight and questioned why the UFC champion did not express his desire to fight him when they met at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas. Despite the financial success that the fights between boxers and MMA fighters have had, Crawford sees no value in a fight with “El Matador” and ruled out any comparison with the confrontation between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and McGregor in 2017. Crawford concluded by asking how much money he would get from a fight with Topuria, emphasizing that he is not at the level of Conor McGregor and that he has never seen him fight.
