Gabriel Bonfim Shines in the UFC Welterweight Division

The UFC’s welterweight division is in the spotlight, and Gabriel Bonfim has seized the opportunity to shine. Bonfim (19-1) achieved an impressive knockout over Randy Brown (20-7) with a flying knee in the second round, in the main event of UFC Fight Night held on Saturday in Las Vegas. Brown, 35, initially protested the stoppage of the fight, but replays showed the impact of Bonfim’s right knee. Bonfim, 28, extended his winning streak to five and challenged former interim champion Colby Covington.

“Colby, stop running. Give me the opportunity to take you out of the ring. Sure, I’m going to retire you”.

The knockout came thanks to the flying knee, but it was the calf kicks that dominated the fight. Bonfim landed 35 total strikes, including 23 to Brown’s leg, according to UFC statistics. Bonfim focused on the leg during the first round, opening up opportunities to attack upstairs in the second. Brown, who had won four of his last five fights, responded well and showed willingness to fight in the exchange of blows, but the knee in the second round sent him to the canvas. Although Brown seemed to recover quickly after the stoppage, he was temporarily unconscious from the impact of the knee. This was the first time Brown had been knocked out since 2020. Bonfim seeks to enter the UFC top 10 for the first time in his career. Before Saturday, he was ranked number 14. His target, Covington, is ranked number 10, although he hasn’t fought since December and hasn’t won since his decision victory over Jorge Masvidal in March 2022.
