Yankees Make Roster Adjustments: Cruz to the Injured List and Wells Out of Action

The New York Yankees have made significant moves in their roster, affecting both the pitching staff and the catcher position. The team has placed right-handed pitcher Fernando Cruz on the 15-day injured list due to a strain in his left oblique.

Parallel to this, catcher Austin Wells is out of the lineup for the second consecutive day. Manager Aaron Boone explained that Wells is dealing with a circulation issue in one of the fingers on his left hand.

Boone indicated that Wells’ injury could be the result of “wear and tear from the catcher position.”

Boone added that Wells underwent several tests to rule out the possibility of a blood clot. Wells is expected to be out of action until Wednesday, and J.C. Escarra will be in charge of the receiving position until his return.

So far, Wells’ test results have been positive, and Boone assured that the injury does not affect his performance. Wells has maintained a batting average of .214 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs in 69 games.

The inclusion of Cruz on the injured list is retroactive to June 28. Cruz, in his first season with the Yankees, has a 2-3 record with a 3.00 ERA and two saves in three opportunities. He has not allowed earned runs in 26 of his 32 appearances.

Cruz’s strikeout rate, at 41.2%, is the highest among pitchers with at least 20 innings pitched, and his 14.73 strikeouts per nine innings is the highest of his career.

Cruz felt discomfort while warming up before Sunday’s game against the Athletics and underwent an MRI on Monday.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Geoff Hartlieb, the Yankees designated infielder CJ Alexander for assignment.
