Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Exits Game with Hamstring Discomfort

Toronto Blue Jays’ first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. left Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth inning due to a hamstring issue. Guerrero made two spectacular defensive plays at first base, demonstrating great agility to receive his teammates’ throws. The last of them was an excellent reception of a long throw from shortstop Bo Bichette, which allowed Jared Triolo to be retired and end the third inning. Guerrero returned to the field to play the fourth inning before being substituted by Ty France when his turn to bat came in the top of the fifth.

Guerrero was fine, but an MRI was scheduled to get a clearer picture of the situation.

John Schneider, Blue Jays Manager
Blue Jays manager John Schneider indicated that Guerrero was “fine,” but an MRI was scheduled to better assess the situation. Schneider commented that the discomfort occurred after a defensive play and that, given the time of the season, it is common for players to experience certain discomfort. Schneider added that Guerrero wanted to go out to play the fourth inning to assess the extent of the injury. However, it was decided to substitute him in the fifth to avoid any risk of aggravating it.

I trust him, and he knows himself very well. We can’t afford to lose him for an extended period, so it was also partially out of precaution. Hopefully, he’ll be ready to play in one or two days. Obviously, he’s very important to our team.

John Schneider, Blue Jays Manager
Guerrero is batting .298 with 21 home runs and 69 RBIs this season for the Toronto Blue Jays, leaders of the American League East Division.
