HOUSTON – Minnesota Twins third baseman Royce Lewis suffered a left hamstring strain during the ninth inning of the game against Houston on Friday night. Lewis stopped while running to first base after hitting a single in the ninth inning and was replaced by a pinch runner. Manager Rocco Baldelli reported that the team still did not know the severity of Lewis’s injury.
This injury occurs after Lewis missed the first 35 games of the season due to a moderate strain in the same hamstring, suffered during spring training. Lewis, selected as the first overall pick in the 2017 draft, has had a career marked by injuries. Last season, he only participated in 82 games due to a severe quadriceps strain and a groin injury. These injuries add to the anterior cruciate ligament tears in his right knee in 2021 and 2022. Lewis, who hit a home run on Friday night, has a batting average of .202 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 30 games this season.“In the post-game review in the locker room, the tests were relatively good,” Baldelli commented. “We will review it tomorrow to assess his condition and how he feels. Often, the player’s condition the next day and his ability to move will give us a lot of information, which will allow us to make a decision on the next steps.”
