Phillies shortstop Trea Turner adds an Emmy Award to his impressive resume, which already includes a National League batting title and a World Series championship ring. Turner was a key part of the Emmy-winning documentary, “The Turnaround.” This production tells the story of the standing ovations the player received in 2023, which were key to revitalizing his season. The documentary won the Emmy Award for Best Short Documentary in May. Sports producer Kyle Thrash and Phillies fan Jon McCann, whose personal connection to Turner was the core of the film, were present at the game to share the trophy with Turner.

Turner, after reading the Emmy inscription, promised the fans that he would greet them from section 301 if he managed to steal a base in Friday’s game.

We can bring a trophy back to the stadium tonight and share it with so many people who were involved in the standing ovations. It’s incredible.

Kyle Thrash
Phillies fans, known for their passion, showed their unconditional support for Turner with ovations during his at-bats in August 2023, at a time when the player was going through a slump.

Turner, who had signed an 11-year, $300 million contract with the Phillies, at that time had a batting average of .238 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs. He was relegated to the eighth spot in the batting order before the series against Kansas City. In the three games against the Royals, Turner went 4 for 12, with two doubles, a home run, and five RBIs, contributing to the Phillies making the playoffs. Later, Turner collaborated on the financing of digital billboards “Thank You, Philly” in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The documentary was produced by Higher Ground, the media company founded by former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. McCann, also known as “The Philly Captain”, is a Philadelphia-based YouTuber and was one of the fans, along with a Philadelphia sports radio host, who led the initiative for fans to support Turner.

During the ceremony, one of the award presenters said: ‘When you face the Olympics, you lose.’ So I thought we had already lost. We didn’t. It was a big surprise.
