Salvador Pérez is out of the Royals game due to illness

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals were forced to make a last-minute change to their lineup for the first game of the series against the Texas Rangers. Star catcher Salvador Pérez was scratched from the starting lineup due to illness.

Pérez, who was originally scheduled to be the catcher for starting pitcher Michael Wacha and bat in the fifth spot, will now be replaced by Luke Maile.

Maile will take the place behind the plate and will bat eighth in the batting order.

Pérez, a nine-time All-Star player, has had a productive season so far, batting .244, with 22 home runs and 70 RBIs.

Maile has taken on a more important role on the team after Freddy Fermin was traded to the Padres before the trade deadline. So far this season, Maile has participated in 11 games, with a batting average of .250, one home run, and two RBIs.
