Royals Activate Concussion List and Call Up Melendez
The Kansas City Royals made important decisions on their roster, placing infielder/outfielder Nick Loftin on the seven-day concussion injured list and calling up outfielder MJ Melendez from Triple-A Omaha.
The series against the Cubs in Chicago was the setting for these moves.
Additionally, Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., and Cubs right fielder Kyle Tucker, were given a day off due to right knee discomfort.
The Thursday day off will give both players two days to recover.
Loftin suffered the injury in the fifth inning of Tuesday’s game, where the Royals lost 6-0 at Wrigley Field. He was hit in the head while trying to get Pete Crow-Armstrong out.
The Royals manager, Matt Quatraro, described Loftin’s condition as a “very mild concussion” that was detected after the game.
Loftin is batting .216 with three home runs and 13 RBIs in 37 games.
Melendez, 26, played 16 games with Kansas City earlier this year, after having played 412 with the Royals in the previous three seasons. He was on the opening day roster, but was assigned to Omaha on April 19 after batting .085 with a home run and an RBI.
In 72 games with Omaha, Melendez batted .252 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs.
Witt apparently aggravated his knee pain when he pulled up on a Matthew Boyd pitch in the fourth inning on Tuesday. Witt was Kansas City’s designated hitter and remained in the game.
Tucker fouled a ball off his knee in the first inning on Tuesday. He stayed in the game, playing right field.
