Red Sox Place Romy Gonzalez on Injured List
The Boston Red Sox have placed first baseman Romy Gonzalez on the 10-day injured list due to a left quad contusion, retroactive to May 8. In a corresponding move, the team recalled second baseman Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.
Sogard is scheduled to share playing time with Abraham Toro.
Sogard was included in Saturday’s starting lineup against Kansas City’s left-handed pitcher, Cole Ragans.
I think it’s something short-term. He wasn’t recovering as we expected at first. So it makes sense to take care of him and he’ll be fine.
Alex Cora, Red Sox manager
After Thursday’s victory over the Texas Rangers, there was some controversy when designated hitter Rafael Devers stated that he would not play at first base, which led to meetings between the Red Sox management and Devers in Kansas City.
Cora was asked if this latest move could lead to Devers starting to take ground balls at first base.
We will keep talking about things. We will keep looking for alternatives. We will do whatever is necessary to keep improving. We have Romy, now we have Toro and we have Sogi. That is the route we are going to follow right now.

González was batting .308 in 17 games after replacing Triston Casas, who is out for the rest of the year due to a torn tendon in his left knee. His OPS is .785.
Sogard will make his season debut on Saturday, after hitting .188 in 28 games with Worcester. His OPS is .562. He hit .273 in 31 games with Boston in 2024.
He’s a good defender. He’s a good player. We’re going to mix him in with him and Toro. Today (Kansas City) has a tough lefty on the mound, so I thought it made sense for him to play. The two of them will split first base for the next week or so.
