Roman Anthony Out of Action Due to Injury

Red Sox rookie Roman Anthony will not play again in the regular season due to a left oblique strain, according to official sources. Anthony, 21, had to leave Tuesday’s game against Cleveland in the fourth inning after a strikeout. An MRI confirmed the severity of the injury. Manager Alex Cora indicated that, generally, players with this type of oblique issue are out of action for between four and six weeks. Before Wednesday’s game, Boston was 2.5 games behind Toronto, leader of the American League East. In addition, they were in position for the second American League wild card.

We move forward. At some point, he will be part of the team again, so we have to be patient, keep pitching, have good at-bats and keep playing.

Anthony missed two games last month due to a mid-back issue, but the outfielder commented Tuesday night that this injury felt worse. The Red Sox also called up infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester before Wednesday’s game against the Guardians. Anthony, one of baseball’s most prominent prospects, debuted in the Major Leagues on June 9th. In 71 games with the Red Sox, he’s batting .292 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs. The player, selected in the second round of the 2022 amateur draft, signed an eight-year, $130 million contract on August 6.
