Aroldis Chapman Signs Million-Dollar Contract with the Boston Red Sox
Star closer Aroldis Chapman and the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement for one year and $13.3 million for the 2026 season. The contract includes a vesting option for 2027. Chapman will secure $26 million in two years if he pitches at least 40 innings next season. The announcement was made on Sunday, following the 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Fenway Park. The pitcher, who was selected for his eighth All-Star appearance this year, will receive a salary of $13 million next year. If the lefty reaches 40 innings in 2026, he will again get $13 million in 2027. Otherwise, he would receive compensation of $300,000, unless both parties agree on a mutual option, which is unlikely. At 37 years old, Chapman is possibly having his best season, with an ERA of 1.02, the lowest of his career, during his 16th season in the Major Leagues and his first in Boston. On Sunday he earned his 27th save. After obtaining his 350th save of his career this season, Chapman, known for his powerful pitch, stated that his goal is to reach 400. On Sunday, he extended his streak of games without allowing hits to 15, the longest in club history and the third-longest in the majors since 1901. Sergio Santos of Toronto was the last to achieve it, in 2013. Chapman has achieved 76 strikeouts in 53 innings this season and has not allowed hits to the last 44 batters he has faced. The closer has a 59-47 record with an ERA of 2.52 and 362 saves for the Reds (2010-15), Yankees (2016-22), Cubs (2016), Royals (2023), Rangers (2023), Pirates (2024), and Red Sox (2025). He ranks third in strikeouts by a relief pitcher (1,322) and 13th on the all-time saves list. This man has been great for us, and not just on the field. What he has done on the field is amazing.
