Jonathan Aranda to the Injured List with Wrist Fracture
The Tampa Bay Rays have placed All-Star first baseman Jonathan Aranda on the 10-day injured list due to a fracture in his left wrist. Aranda’s injury occurred on Thursday during a collision with the New York Yankees’ designated hitter, Giancarlo Stanton. Aranda commented that the injury didn’t seem “catastrophic” and expects to return this season, although the Rays warned that he won’t be able to use his wrist for approximately three weeks. Aranda’s doll has been immobilized with a cast and is scheduled to undergo more tests in three weeks. At that time, the Rays will re-evaluate his return schedule.Stanton hit a soft grounder in the fifth inning to third baseman Junior Caminero, who pounced on the wet grass to field the ball. Aranda stretched to catch Caminero’s errant throw that went towards the runner, and his left wrist appeared to hit Stanton’s left shoulder. Aranda, who was an All-Star for the first time, is batting .316 with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs in 103 games this season. He has an on-base percentage of .394 and an OPS of .872, making him one of the most dangerous hitters in the majors. In the absence of Aranda, manager Kevin Cash moved Yandy Díaz to first base. The Rays reinstated Ha-Seong Kim from the injured list and called up Tristan Gray from Triple-A Durham. The acquisitions from the trade deadline, Griffin Jax and Hunter Feduccia, were active for Friday night’s game.Let’s see how the bone heals. I think he’ll have a new image in about three weeks, but we’ll remain optimistic.
