Jose Quintana Suffers Injury and Worries the Brewers

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jose Quintana injured his calf after finishing his four-inning performance in the 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Brewers manager Pat Murphy reported after the game that the 36-year-old lefty had to leave the field with a limp and underwent an MRI.

This is alarming, given the number of injured players we already have in the bullpen and on the mound. It’s unfortunate.

Murphy explained that the injury occurred when Quintana finished the fourth inning by retiring Jose Fermin with a ground ball to the right side of the infield. Fermin’s ground ball bounced off first baseman Jake Bauers near the line and headed into foul territory. Bauers chased the ball and threw to Quintana, who had run from the mound to cover first base on the play. The Brewers got the out, but Quintana apparently got hurt while heading to first. Quintana has an 11-7 record with a 3.96 ERA in 24 starts this year. Last season, with the New York Mets, he was 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA. The Brewers, leaders of the National League Central Division, clinched their playoff spot on Saturday, becoming the first team in Major League Baseball to do so. Their list of pitchers on the injured list includes All-Star closer Trevor Megill, Logan Henderson, DL Hall, Shelby Miller, and Nick Mears.
