Phillies Bolster Bullpen: David Robertson Joins the Team
The Philadelphia Phillies have reached an agreement with free agent reliever David Robertson, according to sources. The agreement, which is subject to a physical examination, bolsters the Phillies’ bullpen at a crucial point in the season.
Robertson will receive more than $5 million for the rest of the season, with a prorated contract of $16 million.
Robertson, 40, became a free agent after declining a mutual $7 million option with the Texas Rangers in November. Last season, he had a 3-4 record with a 3.00 ERA and two saves in 72 innings during 68 appearances, striking out 99 batters and walking 27.
With 16 years of experience in the Major Leagues, Robertson has a 66-46 record with a 2.91 ERA and 177 saves. He has played for the New York Yankees (2008-14 and 2017-18), Chicago White Sox (2015-17), Philadelphia (2019), Tampa Bay (2021), Chicago Cubs (2022), Philadelphia (2022), New York Mets (2023), Miami (2023), and Texas.
The Phillies, who compete in the National League East, are currently among the 10 teams with the worst bullpen ERA, with an average of 4.30.
