Phillies Implement Six-Man Rotation with Nola’s Return

Phillies manager Rob Thomson announced this Thursday that the team will implement a six-pitcher rotation starting this weekend, coinciding with Aaron Nola’s return from the injured list. Nola is scheduled to start in the final game of the series against Washington on Sunday. The 32-year-old right-hander is returning after suffering a sprain in his right ankle. Left-handed Ranger Suárez will take the mound on Monday against the Mariners. The National League East leaders also feature ace Zack Wheeler, left-handers Cristopher Sánchez and Jesús Luzardo, and right-hander Taijuan Walker.

Once safe and then we have some other ideas on how to attack this as we move forward.

Thomson commented that he is not sure how long they will maintain the six-pitcher rotation. Philadelphia’s starters lead the Major Leagues with 693.1 innings pitched. Sánchez has accumulated 150.2 innings, and Wheeler 144.2. Thomson explained that the goal is to give pitchers extra rest, as they have worked a lot throughout the season. “The only drawback is that we have to take someone out of the bullpen, so we will be a little short, but we will have to figure it out,” he added. Nola hasn’t pitched in the majors since May 14. In three rehab starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, he posted a 2.19 ERA, striking out 17 batters in 12.1 innings.
