Parents and Mariners: The Most Favored Teams After the MLB Trade Deadline

The San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners stood out as the teams with the most movement in bets and the most popular selections among bettors after the MLB trade deadline closed.

Before the close, the Padres had odds of +3500 to win the World Series, but after acquiring pitchers Mason Miller and JP Sears from the Athletics, the odds dropped to +2500. Then, with the arrival of first baseman Ryan O’Hearn and outfielder Ramon Laureano from the Baltimore Orioles, the odds were further reduced to +1600. In addition, the team went from +1800 to +1200 to win the National League championship.

The influence of transactions on the movement of odds was significant, but so was the reaction of the betting public. According to reports, since the close, San Diego has received the most money to win the World Series, with 23%. The New York Mets follow with 14%. Gamblers are hoping that the young talent San Diego gave up will pay off this season, and that the result will be better than in previous attempts. At this year’s deadline, the Padres traded five of their seven best prospects, and since 2014, they have traded stars like Trea Turner, Max Fried and James Wood, among others. On the other hand, the Mariners had a +2500 odds to win the World Series before acquiring third baseman Eugenio Suarez, one of the most prominent acquisitions of the closing. After the transaction, the odds were reduced to +2000, and then to +1400 after acquiring first baseman Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks. They also slightly improved in the betting to win the American League championship, going from +800 to +700. Since Wednesday, Seattle is the most bet-on team, with 18.6% of the tickets and 30.5% of the money wagered in the World Series market. Even without the boost from the Suarez trade, the Mariners have attracted 17% of the bets since the close. Despite remaining relatively quiet at the close, the Los Angeles Dodgers are still clearly the team to beat, with a +240 odds to win the World Series. The Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Phillies are tied for second place with +850. The Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, New York Yankees and Mets, who had different levels of activity at the close, complete the main odds with +1000. Despite improvements from some teams after the trade deadline, others saw their odds plummet drastically. The San Francisco Giants went from +4000 to 100-1 for the World Series, while the Minnesota Twins, who had a player sell-off, went from 100-1 to 250-1.
