Shohei Ohtani Nears Pitching Debut with the Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani’s expected return to the mound could be just around the corner. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts informed the media that Ohtani is scheduled for another simulated game in the coming days, which could be the last before his official debut. Ohtani has made significant progress in his preparation. In his latest simulated game at Petco Park, he threw 44 pitches over three innings against minor league players. His fastball reached speeds between 95 and 99 miles per hour, demonstrating good control of his secondary pitches. This would be the third time Ohtani faces batters in a game setting. Roberts mentioned that there is a “greater than zero” possibility that Ohtani will join the rotation before the All-Star break. Due to his dual role, the Dodgers have the flexibility to use Ohtani as an additional pitcher, allowing him to pitch between two and three innings, followed by another pitcher. This appears to be the team’s main plan. The Dodgers’ pitching staff has faced challenges due to injuries. Currently, 14 pitchers are on the injured list, including four key starters. If Ohtani returns in July, as expected, it will have been 22 months since his second ulnar collateral ligament repair.
