Carlos Narváez will undergo knee surgery, but will be ready for Spring Training

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narváez will undergo surgery on his left knee, but is expected to be recovered for spring training. Craig Breslow, chief baseball operations officer, made the announcement during Monday’s season-ending press conference, following Boston’s elimination from the playoffs last week against the New York Yankees in the AL Wild Card. Breslow explained that the surgery will repair Narváez’s knee meniscus.

There were a couple of instances during the season where he got inflamed, one of them quite evidently, so he missed a bit of time,” Breslow told reporters, referring to an absence in early August in which Narváez was out due to the injury. “He deserves a lot of credit for his willingness to play despite this, potentially even at a time when others might have withdrawn, because he felt he was committed to trying to help the group.

Breslow added that the procedure should be straightforward and they do not anticipate any problems. Boston acquired Narváez in an unusual trade with the Yankees on December 11, sending right-handed pitcher Elmer Rodríguez-Cruz to New York in return. The 26-year-old catcher became one of the team’s biggest surprises, batting .241 with 15 home runs and 50 RBIs in 118 games.
