Brandon Woodruff and the Brewers: Victory, Streak, and Free Burgers

On a Wednesday full of expectations, Brandon Woodruff took the mound to face the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Milwaukee Brewers pitcher felt additional pressure, aware of the importance of the encounter. The victory would not only maintain their perfect record on the season and extend the Brewers’ winning streak to 12 games, but it also meant free burgers for the entire city of Milwaukee.

I was nervous. There was a little more at stake today. I really wanted to win those burgers. Who doesn’t want a free burger?

The Brewers managed to defeat the Pirates with a score of 12-5, thus consolidating their streak of 12 consecutive victories. The local George Webb restaurant chain had promised free burgers if the local baseball team got 17 straight wins, a tradition that dates back to when Milwaukee was home to the minor league Brewers of the old American Association. The promotion changed to 13 games when the Braves made Milwaukee a major league city in 1953, but the franchise did not achieve the feat before moving to Atlanta in 1966. George Webb adjusted the promotion to 12 games when the Brewers moved from Seattle in 1970. In 1987, the Brewers started the season with 13 consecutive wins, resulting in the delivery of more than 170,000 hamburgers. The Brewers repeated the feat in 2018, closing the regular season with eight wins and then four wins in the playoffs. Milwaukee has been close on several occasions since then, including an 11-game winning streak earlier this season. George Webb will announce the details of the draw on Thursday afternoon.
