Dane Myers Responds to Verbal Abuse at Fenway Park
Marlins right fielder Dane Myers was the subject of inappropriate chants from a fan at Fenway Park, a situation that began before he hit a home run to tie the game in the ninth inning, helping Miami rally against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. Myers explained that the heckling began in the eighth inning, when the Red Sox were leading 3-2, and continued in the ninth, after he hit the home run and rookie Jakob Marsee followed with a two-run homer to put the Marlins ahead.Myers reported that he responded to the fan in the ninth inning before security workers intervened. After the fan was removed, Miami secured its 5-3 victory.“Maybe,” Myers responded when asked if the fan said something inappropriate. “I really don’t want to get into that. Probably having a few beers out there, having a good time. It’s a baseball game. I won’t necessarily go into what I exactly heard. It’s part of the game. I think I need to be a professional and probably handle it a little better.”

Myers praised the security workers for their handling of the situation.“Basically I said, ‘Would you be saying this if you were in the field in front of me?'”, Myers recounted. “That was basically the guy who got the whole section involved”.

When asked if the Red Sox approached him to ask what was said, with the possibility of banning the fan for a longer period, he said he wasn’t sure if he would provide details.“Yes, it probably happened to them before. They resolved it immediately,” he commented. “Congratulations on intervening. I would never go into the stands or do anything like that. I just wanted to let them know that I am also a person. I am also human, so I also want some respect.”

In the fourth inning, Myers gave up a two-run homer to Wilyer Abreu and made a turn as if he were going to make an over-the-shoulder catch, but when he crashed into the wall, the ball came out of his glove and went over the fence.“It’s hard to say. As I said, they’re fans. They have the right to cheer and also to boo. I won’t necessarily… go into what was exactly said,” explained Myers.

“I don’t know if that ball was going to go out or not, but having it in my glove and then it going out and costing two runs hurt a little,” he said. “I had the opportunity to make up for it and I was happy to be able to do it.”
