Double Celebration: The Mariners Retire Two Number 51s
Seattle Mariners fans are gearing up for a special season, as the team will retire two number 51s in a gesture of recognition to two franchise legends. The first to be honored will be Randy Johnson, the iconic pitcher who left an indelible mark on the team for more than nine seasons. His number will be retired during the 2026 season.
The announcement was made on the 35th anniversary of the day Johnson threw the first no-hitter in Mariners history.Later, Ichiro Suzuki, the Japanese star who joined the team in 2001 and also wore the number 51, will have his number retired on August 9, shortly after his induction into the Hall of Fame this summer.
Johnson, a ten-time All-Star, won his first Cy Young Award with the Mariners in 1995. His time with the team resulted in a 130-74 record with a 3.42 ERA in 274 appearances, including 266 starts, 51 complete games, and 19 shutouts.
Throughout his 22-year career, Johnson compiled a record of 303-166, an ERA of 3.29, and 4,875 strikeouts, ranking second all-time, behind only Nolan Ryan.
Ichiro will join Ken Griffey Jr. (No. 24) and Edgar Martinez (No. 11) as the only Mariners players with their numbers retired.“Randy is one of the best pitchers in MLB history, and one of the most important figures in the history of our organization,” stated John Stanton, president and managing partner of the Mariners.
