Mariano Rivera Suffers Injury on Yankees Legends Day

The legendary pitcher Mariano Rivera suffered an Achilles tendon injury during the New York Yankees Legends Day game on Saturday, which will require surgery. Rivera’s agent, Fern Cuza, confirmed that the former closer, recognized as the historical leader of saves in baseball, will undergo surgery in the coming days. In his only at-bat, Rivera hit a single against his former teammate Andy Pettitte and reached first base without problems. However, during Willie Randolph’s at-bat, Rivera collapsed in the shallow center field, behind second base. The Yankees revived Old-Timers’ Day for the first time since 2019.

It was a fun day until we found out about Mariano. He injured his Achilles tendon. I don’t know what was going on. We all thought it was a hamstring problem, but I think it’s something worse. I think he’s in the hospital now. Incredible.

In May 2012, Rivera suffered a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while participating in batting practice in Kansas City. He returned for his final season in 2013, finishing his career with a record of 652 saves and 42 postseason saves. In 2019, the 13-time All-Star became the first player to be unanimously inducted into the Hall of Fame, obtaining all 425 votes in the voting conducted by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. He contributed to the Yankees winning five World Series titles and seven American League pennants. This was the second time Rivera participated in the Legends Game, where in 2019 he hit an inside-the-park home run. The event celebrated the 25th anniversary of the 2000 championship team, the last to win three consecutive World Series titles. Clemens, who attended the event for the first time, witnessed a short video message from captain Derek Jeter. Before the event, Rivera mentioned his intention to speak with reliever [Devin Williams](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/33224/devin-williams)Devin Williams.
