Halvorsen, Rockies closer, exits with elbow injury: Concern in Denver

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies’ victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday was marred by an elbow injury to closer Seth Halvorsen. The right-handed pitcher, known for his powerful arm, had to leave the game after throwing five pitches in the ninth inning, and the initial outlook is not encouraging.

It doesn’t look good. I will inform them on Sunday.

Halvorsen, who leads the Rockies with 11 saves, was facing Pirates pinch-hitter Spencer Horwitz at the start of the ninth inning, with Colorado leading 8-4. The count was 0-2 in favor of Halvorsen, but then he threw three straight balls, the last at 99 mph. Immediately after that pitch, Halvorsen winced and grabbed his right arm, prompting Rockies head athletic trainer Keith Duggar to run to the mound to check on him. After a brief conversation, Halvorsen left the game, and Dugan Darnell entered to finish the 8-5 victory. Schaeffer commented that Halvorsen had not experienced problems before Saturday’s game.

Not recently, but he felt something a while ago, although he’s been fine for a while.

Halvorsen has been Colorado’s primary closer since the beginning of June and had converted nine of his last 10 opportunities, including his last six. Three of those saves have come after the All-Star break, helping the Rockies to a 7-6 record. Colorado, which has a record of 30-80, is trying to avoid setting a modern-era record for losses, currently held by the 2024 Chicago White Sox, who finished with a 41-121 record.
