Seth Halvorsen Injury Tarnishes Rockies Victory
The Colorado Rockies’ victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday was overshadowed by an elbow injury to closer Seth Halvorsen. The right-handed pitcher, known for his powerful arm, left the game after throwing five pitches in the ninth inning, and the initial outlook is not encouraging.Halvorsen, who leads the Rockies with 11 saves, was facing Pirates pinch-hitter Spencer Horwitz to open the ninth inning, with Colorado leading 8-4. He was up 0-2 in the count and then threw three consecutive balls, the last at 99 mph. Immediately after that pitch, he winced and hung his right arm, prompting Rockies head athletic trainer Keith Duggar to run to the mound to check on him. After a brief discussion, Halvorsen left the game, with Dugan Darnell entering to finish the 8-5 victory. Schaeffer said Halvorsen had not experienced any problems entering Saturday’s game. “Not recently, but felt something a while ago, but has been fine for a while,” Schaeffer said. Halvorsen has been Colorado’s primary closer since the beginning of June and had converted nine of his last 10 opportunities, including his last six. Three of them have been after the All-Star break, which has helped the Rockies to record a 7-6 record. Colorado, which has a 30-80 record, is trying to avoid setting a modern-era record for losses set by the 2024 Chicago White Sox, who had a 41-121 record.“It doesn’t look good,” said interim manager Warren Schaeffer. “I’ll inform them (on Sunday).”
