Grayson Rodriguez: New Beginning with Angels After Injuries and Change

3 Min Read

Grayson Rodriguez, the talented right-handed pitcher, joins the Los Angeles Angels after a trade that marks a new beginning in his career. After a promising 2024 with the Baltimore Orioles, injuries sidelined him from the diamond, but now he seeks to leave those problems behind on the West Coast.

A New Beginning

Rodriguez, excited about this new stage, expressed his initial surprise at the change, but at the same time, his enthusiasm for what is to come. The pitcher, known for his powerful fastball that reaches 100 mph, had an outstanding performance in 2024 with the Orioles, before back injuries forced him to miss the rest of the season. Subsequently, he faced elbow and shoulder problems, which kept him out of action in 2025. He underwent surgery to remove bone spurs, something that, according to him, has affected him for several years. “I am ready for spring training. I am doing my throwing programs right now and getting ready for it,” Rodriguez stated. The change was announced while Rodriguez was heading to Florida to train with the Orioles. Now, he is preparing to begin long throws and bullpen sessions in January, with his sights set on a full spring training in Tempe, Arizona.
Rodriguez expressed his frustration at not being able to play in 2025, but is now focused on the future. The Angels’ new pitcher has already spoken with Mike Maddux, the team’s new pitching coach, who has a special significance in his development as a player. If Rodriguez’s health holds up, he is expected to strengthen the Angels’ rotation alongside Yusei Kikuchi, José Soriano, and Reid Detmers. The Angels’ general manager, Perry Minasian, acknowledged the risk involved in the change, but is confident in Rodriguez’s potential. Taylor Ward’s departure also allows the team to pursue free agents and reinforce other areas. In addition to looking for a gardener to replace Ward, the Angels need at least another starting pitcher. Mike Trout and Jorge Soler could play in the outfield occasionally, while Jo Adell occupies right field. Minasian hopes this acquisition will positively impact rotation and provide financial flexibility to the team.
