Grayson Rodriguez, the talented right-handed pitcher, joins the Los Angeles Angels, marking a new chapter in his career after his transfer from the Baltimore Orioles.

A New Beginning with the Angels

After a promising 2024 season interrupted by injuries, Rodriguez seeks to leave behind the physical problems that sidelined him from the mound. The move to the Angels represents an opportunity to revitalize his career and demonstrate his potential in the American League.

I was obviously surprised. You never expect to be traded. It was like a whirlwind, but it’s actually super exciting.

The 6’5″ pitcher and former first draft pick, known for his 100 mph fastball, had an outstanding performance in 2024 with the Orioles, before back injuries forced him to miss the rest of the season. Elbow and shoulder problems, along with the recurrence of back pain, prevented him from pitching in 2025, requiring surgery to remove bone spurs.

That’s something that has been with me for three or four years. I’ve had them for a while, and it got to the point where I really couldn’t throw with them. I’m sure that’s what caused some of the injuries in the latissimus dorsi. Being able to get rid of them, my arm feels great now throwing.

The transfer to the Angels represents a bet for general manager Perry Minasian, who sees significant potential in Rodriguez. The pitcher joins a rotation that includes Yusei Kikuchi, José Soriano, and Reid Detmers. The release of Taylor Ward and his $14 million salary frees up resources for the Angels to seek reinforcements in the free agent market, including an outfielder to cover Ward’s absence and at least one additional starting pitcher. The Angels are expected to have Mike Trout and Jorge Soler in the outfield, although both could perform better as designated hitters. Jo Adell occupies right field, so the team may need a starting center fielder.

It’s not just about acquiring someone we think can impact the rotation, but also about freeing up some money to perhaps get into areas where we couldn’t before.
