Giants place Bailey on IL with neck injury; Porter to the rescue

Denver – Logan Porter, catcher for the San Francisco Giants, prepared for his first game in the Major Leagues since 2023, after overcoming travel setbacks. The Giants placed Patrick Bailey on the 10-day injured list due to a neck strain and selected Porter from Triple-A Sacramento. Porter had to hurry to get from Seattle on Wednesday morning, but he managed to arrive in time for batting practice at Coors Field before the game against the Colorado Rockies.

I almost missed the flight, a lot of traffic. I think I was the last one to board and security took an hour and a half. It was a disaster.

Bailey, whose stint on the injured list is retroactive to Sunday, is batting .185 with one home run and 16 RBIs this season. The Giants were hoping Bailey could be Andrew Knizner’s backup during the series in Colorado, but he didn’t improve.

It’s really difficult not to have a second receiver and it just didn’t get much better (on Wednesday). I didn’t feel we were in a position to force it for (on Thursday). The prudent thing was to put him on the injured list right now.

Bailey is the second Giants player to go on the injured list this week. Third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the injured list with a right hand sprain, suffered in Sunday’s victory over Atlanta.

It seems to come in waves. Everyone goes through it. The expectation doesn’t change. Logan knows our guys, he knows all the signs, so he’s a good option too.

Porter last played in the majors with the Kansas City Royals in 2023. He batted .194 in 11 games with one home run. He signed a minor league contract with San Francisco on November 14, 2024, and was with the team during spring training. Melvin said Porter will likely be behind the plate on Thursday when Hayden Birdsong is on the mound. Porter caught starters and relievers during the Cactus League and feels comfortable with them at the major league level.

It should be an easy transition, and I’m familiar with the bullpen.

The team also designated infielder Osleivis Basabe for assignment. He was batting .242 with four home runs with Sacramento. Basabe’s contract was acquired by the Tampa Bay Giants in February.
