The baseball world mourns the loss of Sandy Alomar Sr., a prominent infielder in the 1960s and 1970s. Alomar, who also had a successful career as a coach and manager in his native Puerto Rico, passed away at the age of 81.
The news was confirmed by Alomar’s family, according to a spokesperson for the Cleveland Guardians. Sandy Alomar Jr., son of Sandy Alomar Sr. and brother of Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar, also played under his father’s direction in winter leagues and lower categories, and is currently part of the Guardians’ technical team.

He was selected for the All-Star in 1970. He stole 227 bases, including 39 in 1971, the year he led the American League in at-bats (689) and plate appearances (739). He participated in a playoff series with the Yankees in 1976.
In the 1980s, Alomar dedicated himself to coaching in the San Diego Padres system, where he was the third base coach from 1986 to 1990. In the 2000s, he also worked as a coach for the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, and the Mets.
