Caleb Durbin will be the starting third baseman for the Red Sox on Opening Day
Caleb Durbin has been confirmed as the starting third baseman for the Boston Red Sox for Opening Day. The player revealed the news to reporters on Wednesday. Durbin, who joined the team after a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers just before spring training, was informed of the decision by manager Alex Cora on Tuesday. The third base position became vacant after Alex Bregman signed with the Chicago Cubs during the offseason. Durbin, 25, has been sharing time at third base with Marcelo Mayer during spring training. Durbin has shown good performance both with the bat and defensively during spring training. He is batting .394 in 33 at-bats through Tuesday, with 7 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. For his part, Mayer is batting .250 in 24 at-bats, with a home run and 2 RBIs.I’m going to stay at third from now on. Before that, I would look at the board and wherever I was that day, although I was mostly at third, obviously. But Cora said I would stay at third for now.

Last season, Durbin hit .256 with 11 home runs and 53 RBIs, finishing third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. Mayer is the leading candidate to start the season at second base, while shortstop Trevor Story and first baseman Willson Contreras will complete Boston’s infield.I love third base. I’m excited. I’m ready where the team needs me, that’s the idea. But they feel good with me at third. Obviously, I feel good at third. So, excited. Hopefully, I’ll stay there for a while.
