Seiya Suzuki Suffers Knee Injury, Situation Evaluated
Mesa, Arizona – The Cubs reported this Tuesday that Seiya Suzuki suffers from a slight sprain in the ligament of his right knee. Manager Craig Counsell added that the Japanese outfielder will be evaluated during the week to determine if it is necessary to include him on the injured list.
Suzuki’s injury occurred during the World Baseball Classic quarter-final match, where Japan fell 8-5 to Venezuela. The incident happened on Saturday in Miami.
Suzuki, after an attempted steal in the first inning, made a headfirst slide into second base and was injured. Subsequently, he was seen walking with difficulty towards the dugout and was replaced in center field at the end of the inning.
The 31-year-old player returned to the Cubs’ spring training facility on Monday. He was seen walking slowly, using a soft knee brace on the affected knee. He underwent imaging tests to determine the severity of the injury.
Suzuki is in the final season of his five-year, $85 million contract. Throughout his career with the Cubs, he has maintained a batting average of .269, with 87 home runs and 296 RBIs in 532 games, highlighting the 103 RBIs and 32 home runs that led the team in 2025.
